NESE Master Student Wins Best Oral Presentation Award at 6th International Conference & Postgraduate Colloquium for Environmental Research 2022

The Centre for Postgraduate Studies and Research congratulates Chew Zhi Ling, a master student from XMUM School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, on winning the 1st Place in Best Oral Presentation Award at the 6th International Conference & Postgraduate Colloquium for Environmental Research (POCER) 2022, which was held on 9-11 Jun 2022 at Langkawi, Malaysia.

Chew Zhi Ling presented her work entitled “Simultaneous Extraction of Low-gluten Flour and Gum from Durian Seed for Food Applications”, which has been carried out under the supervision of Dr. Kua Yin Leng. Her presentation proposes a green and safe method for extracting both flour and gum products simultaneouslyfrom durian seedfor use as food ingredient and stabilizer in food applications.Green valorisation of the abundant durian biomass displays the practicality of the findings in offering valuable information for achieving sustainability, addressing waste disposal issues, and enhancing food security and nutrition.

This work is conducted in collaboration with Prof. Gan Suyin from the University of Nottingham Malaysia and Dr. Harrison Lau Lik Nang from Malaysian Palm Oil Board through a Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) project [grant number FRGS/1/2021/TK0/XMU/02/2].

Co-organized and hosted by XMUM, this year’s conference has attracted over 300 scientists and industrial participants from more than 100 institutions in 30 countries and regions. With the theme of “The Green Industrial Revolution of the Next Decade”, the event addresses issues related to green-environmental research. Topics covered include biochemical engineering; biofuel and energy; carbon emission reduction; computational tools for environmental applications; renewal energy, IR4.0; process system engineering; and energy and environmental policy among others.
