Dr. Yong Wai Fen & CME Students Publish in SCI Tier-1 Journal Separation and Purification Technology


The Center for Postgraduate Studies and Research (CPSR) congratulates Voon Boon Kee, Lau Hui Shen, and Associate Professor Dr. Yong Wai Fen from the XMUM School of Energy and Chemical Engineering for the recent article published in Separation and Purification Technology, an SCI tier-1 journal with a latest impact factor of 9.136.

Voon Boon Kee and Lau Hui Shen both made substantial contribution to this paper. Boon Kee is an XMUM alumnus, while Hui Shen is currently a master’s student under the supervision of Dr. Yong Wai Fen, the corresponding author of this article. This work is funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Xiamen University Malaysia Research Fund, and Hengyuan International Sdn. Bhd. 

Entitled “Functionalized two-dimensional g-C3N4 nanosheets in PIM-1 mixed matrix membranes for gas separation”, the article introduces four types of functional groups, namely sulfuric acid, aliphatic amino, aromatic amino, and sulfonic groups onto the g-C3N4 nanosheets, and investigates their respective gas separation performance in PIM-1 matrix. The results reveal the good structural properties of the sulfonic acid functionalized g-C3N4 MMMs, along with the high separation properties that surpassed the 2008 Robeson upper bound. These results pave the way for using the developed membranes in practical H2 purification, air separation, and CO2 capture.

Dr. Yong Wai Fen is an Associate Professor and Head of Programme (Master of Science and PhD in Chemical Engineering) at School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia. With a Ph.D. degree from the National University of Singapore, her research interests include sustainable materials and membrane technologies for CO2 capture, biogas separation, industrial air purification, and water purification. She is also a Chartered Engineer under the Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), UK. She has won several prestigious awards including the Green Talents Award in 2016, Top 50 outstanding Green Talents alumni from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the Finalist of the Energy and Sustainability Awards from the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Singapore.
