Dr. Ong Wee Jun Named 2021 Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate

For the third consecutive year (2019, 2020 and 2021), Associate Professor Dr. Ong Wee Jun from XMUM School of Energy and Chemical Engineering has been named Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher for the cross-field category.

This means that he is among the top 1% of the most-cited scientists for field and publication year in the Web of ScienceTM citation index. In 2021, fewer than 6,700 researchers of 21 research fields and across multiple fields have earned this distinction based on the number of highly cited papers they had produced over an 11-year period from January 2010 to December 2020.

Dr. Ong Wee Jun is also among the 8 researchers from Xiamen University who have received this global recognition, as well as one of the 16 Malaysian scientists included in this list.

At present, Dr. Ong Wee Jun has published over 95 peer-reviewed journal papers indexed by Web of Science, with an average citation of over 115 per paper (Web of Science h-index = 45).

Dr. Ong said: “I am very honored to be named as Global Highly Cited Researcher for the third consecutive year. Such recognition has inspired me to strive for the development of nanotechnology and energy science in Malaysia and beyond from fundamental studies to pilot-scale production. As such, industrial collaboration with academia is essential in stimulating the technological readiness towards the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050s.

“I would like to thank the funding agency (MOHE/MOSTI/XMUM), collaborators and research students for their support throughout my research career. It is a team effort toward impactful discoveries for the betterment of society.

Dr. Ong Wee Jun is the Director of Center of Excellence for NaNo Energy & Catalysis Technology (CONNECT) at Xiamen University Malaysia, as well as the Conference Chairman of the recent 1st International Conference on Energy Materials (ICEM) held from November 5-8, 2021.

He was awarded several prestigious awards, including the Young Researcher Award by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (2018), Green Talent Award by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (2018), Merdeka Award Grant (2018), and Materials Horizons Outstanding Paper Award by Materials Horizons, Royal Society of Chemistry (2019). He has been named as “Global Highly Cited Researcher” by Clarivate Analytics for 3 years in a row (2019, 2020, and 2021) and the “World’s Top 2% Scientist” in 2020 and 2021 by Stanford University.

His research interests include the development of advanced hybrid nanomaterials for various energy and environmental applications via heterogeneous and homogenous catalysis by aligning with 10-10 Malaysian Science, Technology, Innovation and Economy (MySTIE) Framework. This includes photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, electrocatalysis and thermal catalysis for clean energy applications using 2D nanostructures.

Dr. Ong Wee Jun is currently recruiting postgraduate students for his NanoECats research group. For candidates who are interested, please contact him at weejun.ong@xmu.edu.my. For more information about Dr. Ong and his research group, please refer to the links below:
