Research and Innovation Achievements: Departments of Journalism and Advertising

During the past five years, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) has made remarkable progress in developing a thriving research culture and fostering professional excellence. The Departments of Journalism and Advertising has contributed significantly to this effort by producing conference contributions, journal articles and book publications. 

Conference Contribution

From 2016 to 2021, Associate Professor Dr. Wang Changsong has participated in more than 20 international conferences to communicate his research notions on cinema studies, cultural studies and higher education landscape. He received the Best Paper Award at the China New Media Communication Association Annual Conference 2019 and the 2nd ASPIKOM International Communications Conference 2021.

Dr. Markus Georg Thomas Heidingsfelder, Dr. Jeyasushma Veeriah and Mr. Chandrasekaran Veeraiah also showcased their passion for research by presenting research ideas at several national and international conferences.

Conference Hosting

In 2019, Dr. Wang Changsong co-hosted the World Conference on Media and Mass Communication in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In view of the event’s great success, he would co-host the same conference in 2021, which is scheduled to be held in Cagliari, Italy.

Dr. Markus co-directed “Futures of Media” conference series (2019) in Suzhou, China and “Observed with Niklas Luhmann’s Systems Theory” seminar series (2020) in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬Journal Articles

As the first and corresponding author, Dr. Wang Changsong published three papers in WOS journals (e.g. Advanced Science Letters). His has been conducting joint research activities with foreign universities. 

With six peer-reviewed works published in prestigious journals, Associate Professor Dr. Nicole Yang Lai Fong ‬advanced readers’ understating of how media gives meaning to events and shapes the audience’s perception. In her papers, Dr. Nicole incorporated the framing theory to show her nuanced insights into media ideologies.   ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Dr. Ahadzadeh Ashrafsadat utilized interdisciplinary approaches to channel her research towards health communication and the intersection between human psychology and social media. She has published five papers in SSCI Q2 journals and two Scopus-indexed ones. With focuses on theories and methodology, her recent publications illuminated the underlying mechanism of individuals’ behaviors on social networking sites from a psychological perspective.

Dr. Aleena Tan Poh Ling has produced four Scopus-indexed journal papers on heritage communication and consumer behavior. One of her research studies underscores the importance of visitors’ mindfulness in tourism experience management and yields some theoretical and practical implications to augment tourist satisfaction.

 


Books and Book Chapters

With an insightful understanding of film studies, Dr. Wang Changsong is the author of the book Genre Analysis: Chinese Youth on Screen. His deep passion for Film also motivated him to contribute seven book chapters.

Dr. Markus has authored one book with Springer, co-edited two books and guest-edited two journals (Cybernetics & Human Knowing, Kybernetes).  His research on the 45th American president published by Springer (“Trump – beobachtet”, English: Observing Trump) aims to defocalize Trump’s actions and shift the attention towards the social structures. Dr. Aleena and Dr. Jeyasushma also produced contributory book chapter.

We are proud of the hard work and amazing achievements of our students. It is deeply  rewarding to see them gaining knowledge and improving competency while learning with us, with remarkable successes at both national and international levels.

Although our departments are young, we are determined to grow together with it, aiming for greater success in the future. For us, research is a window into the unknown. We hope to open more windows and, by doing so, turn the unknown into the known.
