XMUM Undergraduate Wins Best Paper Award at IECBES 2020

The Research Management Center congratulates Kelvin Voon Yan Jie, a final year student from New Energy Science and Engineering (NESE) programme, on winning the Best Paper Award at IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES) 2020.

Held virtually from 1 to 3 March 2021, the Conference covered a diverse range of topics on biomedical engineering, healthcare technology and medical informatics. With the theme of “Leading Modern Healthcare Technology: Enhancing Wellness”, it sought to incorporate all factors that influence health, wellness and disease, such as mind, spirit, community and body.

During the Conference, Kelvin presented his Final Year Project research entitled “Nerve Signal Propagates in the Mid-Infrared to Terahertz Spectral Range by a Mechanism Consistent with Ephaptic Coupling”. He modelled the myelinated nerve fiber using experimentally-obtained optical parameters, and reproduced the experimental study of ephaptic coupling with a nerve slice through electromagnetic full-wave stimulation. The research has been conducted under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Kelvin Ooi Jian Aun (NESE) and Prof. Dr. Ong Chong Kim (Physics).

Below is the testimony from Kelvin:

“I am proud and grateful to work under the supervision of Dr. Kelvin Ooi for my final year project. It was a meaningful experience to publish my own work and present it at IECBES2020. Through research and paper writing, I learnt how to study more efficiently. Dr. Kelvin Ooi provided me with a lot of guidance and advice during this period. Hence, I encourage all the students to participate in research and strive for publication at a scientific conference. The most important thing is to choose the research field that you are interested in.”
