​Ir. Dr. Wong Shen Yuong Publishes in SCI Q1 Journal as First and Corresponding Author

The Research Management Center congratulates Ir. Dr. Wong Shen Yuong from Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) programme on her recent publication entitled “A New Probabilistic Output Constrained Optimization Extreme Learning Machine”, as First and Corresponding Author. The paper was published online on February 2020 (Volume 8, Issue 1) in IEEE Access, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

This research is a collaborative effort of Ir. Dr. Wong Shen Yuong and Prof. Yap Keem Siah from Universiti Tenaga Nasional, as well as Dr. Li Xiaochao, who is also affiliated with Xiamen University Malaysia.

Machine learning approaches have received overwhelming attention from many researchers for solving problems that cannot be ironed out by traditional approaches. However, most of these approaches do not tell the probability estimates of how credible and reliable the output can be for each prediction, and this should not be overlooked because knowing the likelihood of a phenomenon is very important in making the right judgment for high risk problems and critical applications that demand high reliability. Probabilistic output models are highly necessary for risk-sensitive applications because probabilistic estimates provide indication to how much a user can rely on each prediction in the midst of decision-making process. Hence, this paper explores how Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) being one of the most successful machine learning algorithms for single hidden layer feedforward neural networks can be converted to a probabilistic output model.

Ir. Dr. Wong Shen Yuong is affiliated with Electrical and Electronics Engineering Programme, Xiamen University Malaysia. She is a Professional Engineer (PEng./ Ir.) registered to the Board of Engineers Malaysia, accredited under the Washington Accord, International Engineering Alliance. More recently, Ir. Dr Wong has been appointed an Editorial Board Member of Tier -1 SCI Applied Soft Computing Journal. Her research interests include electrical power system faults detection and diagnosis, computer vision and image processing, machine learning, deep learning, pattern recognition, and other applications of artificial intelligence.
