Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) encourages full utilization of its laboratories and research facilities and supports students, researchers and laboratory staff to make use of these research facilities for the purposes of research and innovation. These activities will certainly enrich research culture in XMUM, add to the staff and students experience, as well as strengthen the link between XMUM and researchers from different institutions.
The following guidelines will help to govern important aspects of these research activities, mitigate risks for all parties and provide clarity in terms of decisional authority and recommended practices. This guidelines apply to XMUM students, staff and researcher as well as researcher from other institutions that engaged in research and innovation activities in XMUM.
2. Decisional authority
Requests for permission to make use of laboratory space and/or research equipment should be made to the Laboratory Center by filling the request form (see pg. 3-7) and submit through the affiliated principal investigator, researcher, or, in the case of final year project, the respective academic supervisor.
A copy of concept sheet, outlining the nature of the work, instruments required, training requirement, time, duration, sample size and other important information about the work shall be provided. The work will be evaluated for its suitability to be conducted in XMUM laboratory. CV of the user and their principle investigator/researcher/supevisor shall also be provided.
3. Liability insurance
XMUM’s institutional liability insurance covers current XMUM’s students and employees only; whilst students and researcher form other institutions are not covered under this policy.
4. Intellectual property rights
See XMUM Policy on Inventions and Software which applies to all activity involving XMUM laboratories, equipment and facilities.
5. Supervision
All individuals and groups wishing to access laboratory space and equipment are required to be affiliated with an academic supervisor in the laboratory space being accessed. For fresh user, training on basic operation and maintanence of the instrument will be provided. Users are require to pass an evaluation before they are allow to operate the instrument independently. Shall the user face any difficult situation in operating the instrument, XMUM’s laboratory staff shall always be consulted.
6. Fees
Facilities and administration cost will be incurred according to the price listed in below.

Note: All samples are charged at per hour basis, unless specified.
ii. Operator fee: If the user is solely or substantially rely on XMUM laboratory staff for operation of the instrument, additional operator fee will be incurred on case-by-case basis.
iii. Training fee: If the external user require XMUM to provide them with comprehensive training of a particular instrument, training fee will be incurred on case-by-case basis depending on the content of the training.
iv. Lab space fee: For user whose experimental work are to be undertaken in XMUM, lab space fee will be incurred at the rate as follow:

7. Services
Any services required on the part of the student(s) in order to make use of the laboratory/research
equipment should be fully outlined in the application form. Examples include assistance/training to operate equipment, interpret results, and advice on experiment design.
8. Conflicts of interest
XMUM’s Regulations on Conflicts of Interest apply to any arrangement for the use of laboratory space and equipment.
